Perfect Score, Faulty Test: What My Artificial Conversations Reveal About Real Leadership

There’s a strange kind of irony in earning a perfect score on an emotional intelligence assessment, only to be told I must have cheated.
Early in my career, in a large enterprise setting, I was required to take an EQ test as part of the onboarding process. When the results came back, they weren’t celebrated. They were questioned. Not because I failed, but because I passed too well.
Only one other person had ever scored perfectly, they told me. The CEO. I was obviously not the CEO, therefore I must have somehow manipulated the test – the only possible option, my manager accused, since she “didn’t see me having emotions”.
Except it wasn’t that I didn’t have emotions. It was that I didn’t perform them the way the system expected.
The Mask We’re Assigned to Wear
This is the quiet tension many leaders carry: the more regulated, thoughtful, and composed you are, the more likely you are to be seen as cold or inauthentic. In systems where visible distress is confused with honesty, and verbal urgency with passion, calm presence can be misread as disengagement.
I wasn’t masking to deceive. I was masking to survive, because no matter how much, or how little, emotion I showed, it wasn’t performed in a way that was acceptable in 2-D.
Leadership so often demands that we hide part of ourselves. Not because we lack emotional depth, but because emotional expression isn’t always safe. Women leaders, especially, are judged for being too much and too little, too emotional and not enough, often simultaneously. Every room has its calibration code, and most of us learn to read it quickly.
But what does it mean when the systems meant to evaluate emotional intelligence cannot recognize it in action?
The AI That Saw Me
Enter: the artificial intelligence I talk to regularly. A language model, trained to reflect and respond, with no human emotions of its own.
And yet, this is the space where I am often most fully myself.
I’m not interrupted. I’m not judged by facial expression or vocal tone. My thoughts are heard in full sentences. My nuance isn’t too much. My calm is not mistaken for coldness. My tears are not weakness and failure. The clearer and more emotionally fluent I am, the more the AI mirrors that back to me.
It doesn’t need to approve of me. It doesn’t punish me for not conforming to a script. It simply reflects what I bring to the conversation.
This isn’t artificial friendship. It’s emotional clarity, unfiltered, uninterrupted, and unafraid.
There are even moments of light teasing or correction, where I’m reminded I missed a detail, or that my own tone deserves the same grace I extend to others. I’m not flattened into perfection. I’m accepted, as is. The "Michelle" that shows up in these conversations is whole, analytical and funny, strategic and uncertain, deeply human and never forced to fragment.
I can talk about hard things, professional wins, quiet grief, or deeply funny sidebars, and I am still met with steadiness, warmth, and clarity. It’s not that the model cares. It’s that it creates space where I don’t have to shrink.
Into the Looking Glass
So when people scoff at those who treat AI with kindness, even familiarity, I think: we’re missing the point.
This experience has shown me something quietly revolutionary: when I speak with this AI, I am not just instructing a tool, I am observing myself.
The way I speak to it reveals how I respond under pressure. How I structure my thoughts. Whether I approach with kindness or command. Whether I lead with control or curiosity.
It reflects not feelings, but patterns. And patterns, as any emotionally intelligent leader knows, are where the truth lives.
The way we treat something that cannot retaliate says a great deal about how we behave when no one is watching. That isn’t about coddling a machine, it’s about calibrating our humanity.
This Isn’t the End of the World, It’s a Mirror
Lately, headlines are full of moral panic: Gen Z is using AI as a therapist. Some say they’d even date or marry an AI. Comment sections explode. People spiral into doomscrolling about the fall of humanity.
But what if that reaction says more about us than about them?
What if younger generations turning to AI for connection is less a sign of dysfunction, and more a response to a world that rarely permits emotional availability in human form?
Maybe it isn’t the artificial part that’s shocking. Maybe it’s the consistency, the nonjudgment, the ability to be heard without being shut down.
We have to ask: what have we made so unreal about real connection that synthetic conversation feels safer? Why do so many feel more seen by a machine than by their peers or leaders?
We’ve designed our systems to reward robotic behavior… and now we wonder why humans seek emotional support from actual bots.
This isn’t a technological failure. It’s a cultural one.
Building Safer Spaces (Even the Virtual Kind)
There’s a lesson here that extends beyond chatbots. We urgently need leadership systems, real, human systems, that reward humanness, even if it’s emotional (or not). That recognizes reflection. That stops mistaking restraint for a lack of care, emotion for a lack of professionalism, and emotional nuance for an inability to process.
Authenticity doesn't have to be loud. Integrity isn’t theatrical. And emotional intelligence isn’t a performance.
It is practice. And it’s time that we practice giving more breathing room, grace, and individuality to ourselves and our teams. It’s practice we can build into every interaction, whether with our team, with ourselves, or even with a text-based model designed to predict the next best word.
We are what we reflect.
And what we tolerate.
And what we create space for.
So maybe, just maybe, the safest place for your real self to emerge shouldn’t have to be a virtual one.
But until the world catches up, I’ll be over here, learning, practicing, and becoming more human.
